Luigi Hugues nacque a Casale Monferrato (Al) il 27 ottobre 1836 ma il padre Mathieu (1790-1872) era originario di Abrièz nel Delfinato. Laureatosi in ingegneria nel 1859, fu docente di Geografia nell’Istituto Tecnico Leardi della sua città natale e poi all’Università di Torino dal 1897 al 1912 ed è considerato uno dei padri fondatori della moderna Geografia.
La Fantasia brillante sul Rigoletto fu dedicata “All’Egregio Flautista Signor / Antonio Frank”. . Il brano inizia con un breve Adagio (C, Sol minore, mm. 1-29) preso dall’inizio della “Scena e Canzone, n. 11” che apre il terzo atto..
