Hugues scrisse circa un centinaio di pezzi per flauto e pianoforte e, a differenza degli altri flautisti virtuosi dell’epoca, le fantasie operistiche sono in minoranza. Fra i tanti pezzi strumentali originali si segnalano soprattutto i sette Notturni (op. 53, 60, 63, 66, 68, 94 e 113) e le cinque Sonate: “Sonata Romantica” op 57, Sonata in fa op. 95, “Sonata Fantastica” op. 100, Sonata in do maggiore op. 119 e Sonata in si minore op. 121. Le lastre per la stampa della “Melodia Romantica / originale / per / Flauto / e / Pianoforte” op. 12 furono incise il 18 agosto 1863 e Francesco Lucca la pubblicò col n. di edizione 14260 e la dedica “Al distinto pianista Eugenio Testa”.
