Luigi Hugues nacque a Casale Monferrato (Al) il 27 ottobre 1836 ma il padre Mathieu (1790-1872) era originario di Abrièz nel Delfinato. Laureatosi in ingegneria nel 1859, fu docente di Geografia nell’Istituto Tecnico Leardi della sua città natale e poi all’Università di Torino dal 1897 al 1912 ed è considerato uno dei padri fondatori della moderna Geografia.
La Fantasia sull’Aida è una delle più elaborate e complesse dell’intero corpus di Hugues perché utilizza molti temi e, come avviene anche nell’opera di Verdi, li intreccia in quanto caratterizzanti i tre personaggi chiave: Aida, Amneris e Radames…
