Very little is known about the Bolognese composer Angelo Antonio Caroli (Bologna, June 13, 1701–Bologna, June 26, 1778), and there are currently no published biographies, even brief ones. He was a counterpoint student of Giovanni Antonio Riccieri and carried out his entire career in Bologna, becoming Choirmaster of the Metropolitan Church of St. Peter’s, as attested in the eight volumes of the four “Masses for four full voices, two with violins ad libitum and two with violins obbligato” published in Bologna in 1766. Caroli was at the time the Choirmaster of the second church in Bologna and was therefore one of the best-known composers, as demonstrated by the fact that on October 9, 1770, he was part of the commission that examined the fourteen-year-old Mozart and approved his admission to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna
